THE first light rail line in the Algerian city of Sidi Bel Abbès was inaugurated on July 25 by minister of transport and public works Mr Abdelghani Zaalane.

Construction began on the initial 14.3km section of Line T1 in June 2013, with Turkish construction company Yapi Merkezi carrying out civil works.

Services are operated by a fleet of 34 seven-section Alstom Citadis low-floor LRVs. The 43.7m-long vehicles were assembled by Cital, a joint venture of Alstom, Algiers Metro Company (EMA), Ferrovial, and Algerian National Railways (SNTF), at its facility in Annaba.
