THE Alstom-led Gibela consortium has selected a site at Ekurhuleni in the South African province of Gauteng as the location for a Rand 2bn ($US 201m) rolling stock plant, which will assemble commuter trains for Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

Gibela was awarded a Rand 51bn contract last year to supply 3600 emu vehicles over 10 years from 2015, and local content is expected to reach 69% by the second year of production. Prasa and Gibela recently concluded negotiations over the major elements of the contract.

The 35-hectare facility will be part of a larger industrial park at Ekurhuleni.
