BANGLADESH Railway (BR) has awarded a Rs 200m ($US 3m) contract to Barsyl, India, to conduct detailed design and construction supervision for the rehabilitation of the Kulaura - Shahbazpur line.

The $US 87.85m project, which is being funded through an Indian line of credit, involves reopening the metre-gauge line which closed in 2002 due to repeated derailments resulting from the poor state of the track.

The line is located in northeastern Bangladesh and used to cross the border to reach Mahishasan in India.
