Construction began in 2008 and the Chongqing - Guangyuan section opened in December 2015, with operations beginning on the Guangyuan - Minxian section in December 2016. With the opening of the section north of Minxian, the Chongqing - Lanzhou journey time has been reduced to around 12 hours.
The line has a maximum operating speed of 200km/h for passenger trains and 160km/h for freight.
In the 832km between Guangyuan and Lanzhou the line passes through 178 tunnels and over 285 bridges.
