The contract, which is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), covers design, manufacture, testing and commissioning of the trains, as well as the supply of spare parts, with an option to train operating and maintenance staff. There is also an option for 22 additional cars.

The stainless type RS13 trains must be compatible with existing type RS1 trains supplied by the MRM consortium.

Mitsubishi Electric will supply the propulsion and control equipment. The trains will have three-phase ac traction equipment with variable-voltage variable-frequency control and regenerative braking. They will operate on lines electrified at 25kV ac with flexible and rigid catenary.

BEML entered the metro car market in 2002 and has since supplied more than 600 cars to Delhi Metro, 150 cars for phase one of the Bangalore Metro, 40 cars for the Jaipur metro which started revenue operation on June 2.
