However, the estimated cost of the trains has yet to be approved by the Dhaka Metro Rail authority and Japan International Cooperative Agency (Jica) which is helping to fund the project.

Quadar says that construction of the Bangladeshi's capital first metro line linking Uttara Third Phase, Agargaon, Farmgate and Motijheel will start in December. Completion of the first section from Uttara to Agargaon is scheduled for December 2019 while the entire project should be completed by 2024.

A Japanese consortium is currently working on the detailed design for the 20km 16-station elevated line, which is expected to carry 60,000 passengers per hour.

The project to build the first metro line in Dhaka was approved in 2012 while the funding deal with Jica was signed in February 2013. Jica will provide Taka 165.95bn ($US 2.1bn) while the Bangladesh government will fund the remaining Taka 53.9bn.
