Each course is beginning with around 50 students, with a fully residential programme. NRTI also plans to launch a total of five postgraduate courses as well as additional undergraduate courses and PhD programmes over the next five years.

Topics covered by the courses include management and leadership, engineering and applied science, transport planning and design, transport policy and law, and humanities, arts and social sciences.

The University is being funded by the ministry of railways, and has signed memorandum of understandings with the Berkeley University of California and Cornell University in the United States.
