The proposed 29.5km route would complement the inaugural 38km airport service to Manggarai station, which is expected to open in July 2017. State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is currently studying the route and president director Mr Edi Sukmoro says the intention is to relieve pressure at Manggarai, with both lines expected to serve 33,700 people per day.
“The current load at Manggarai is already heavy,” Sukmoro says. “In addition, Jakarta Kota is a transit point for many commuter train routes. We hope many people will opt for the train as their mode of transportation to the airport to reduce road congestion.”
KAI is currently finalising land procurement for the project, with around 35 hectares required, 78% of which has been secured. The government appropriating approximately Rupiah 1.5 trillion ($US 114m) towards land procurement.
The 38km line to Manggarai will offer a journey time of 55 minutes, with the service using existing commuter rail infrastructure and a new 12km double-track branch from the Jakarta - Tangerang commuter line near Batu Ceper to a new station at the airport. Work on the airport station is expected to be completed in December.
According to KAI logistics and development director Mr Budi Noviantoro, 3km of track has been laid on the new section. The new line is set to be served by 10 six-car trains supplied by a consortium of Bombardier and Inka, Indonesia to Railink, a consoirtium of KAI and state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura under a Rupiah 1 trillion contract. Four of the trains have already delivered.
