Construction is expected to begin in 2017 on the 13km line, which will run south along the west bank of the Huangpu River from an interchange with metro Line 4 at Nanpu Bridge to Xupu Bridge in Xuhai.
A number of other light rail projects are also being developed in the city. Plans were approved last year for a 28.5km two-line network in the southwestern district of Songjiang, which will feed into metro Line 9. The project is due to be completed in 2017.
A two-line network is also planned for the western suburb of Qingpu comprising a 5.2km northern line with 12 stations and a 9.2km southern line with 18 stations.
