Alliance to carry out Sydney capacity enhancement TfNSW

TRANSPORT for New South Wales (TfNSW) has formed an alliance with Australian partners Leighton Contractors and Abigroup to carry out the $A 265m ($US 273m) Epping – Thornleigh Third Track (ETTT) project, which will increase capacity through a major bottleneck in the Sydney area.

The construction of a third track will allow the segregation of northbound freight and passenger trains on the steeply-graded section of the Epping – Hornsby section of the Main North Line. The additional track will run for a distance of 6km from Pennant Hill to Thornleigh, with three new switches, a new bridge over the M2 highway and Devlins Creek near Epping, and upgrading of stations at Pennant Hills, Beecroft, and Cheltenham. The ETTT alliance will also upgrade the existing 500m loop between Thornleigh and Pennant Hills.

Leighton's share of the contract is worth $A 120m and the project is due to be completed in mid-2016.

ETTT is a key element of the Northern Sydney Freight Corridor (NFSC) programme, which involves upgrading the 155km mixed-traffic line between Sydney and Newcastle.
