CAF AM class EMUs are now operating all weekend services on the Southern Line Papakura and the Western Line Swanson. The Swanson line is the final section of the network to be electrified, although a connecting diesel service will continue to operate between Pukekohe and Papakura to the south of Auckland. Trains run every half hour with an hourly connecting service on the Pukekohe line.

The Southern and Western lines are still diesel-worked on weekdays and the next phase of the modernisation programme will see the launch of seven-day electric operation on these routes.

By mid-April CAF had delivered 50 of the 57 AM class EMUs on order, with 42 trains provisionally accepted and 33 in service.

Each 25kV ac three-car set accommodates up to 375 passengers, which according to Auckland Transport is a 40% increase over the capacity of the DMUs and locomotive-hauled trains they have replaced.

Since 2003 the number of services operating on the network has increased from around 40,000 per year to 140,000 and ridership has surpassed 13 million. Passenger numbers in March this year were 33% higher than the same period in 2013.
