The first VLocity trains were introduced in 2005. The 160km/h DMUs are powered by Cummins QSK19R engines and each three-car train accommodates 216 passengers. Bombardier maintains the trains along with V/Line’s classic fleet in West Melbourne.

The VLocity fleet has formed part of Victoria’s policy to expand regional services in the state, where passenger traffic on regional services grew by more than 19% in 2016.
