The interior and exterior has been designed in close cooperation with Transport for New South Wales to create a unique identity for the new metro and enhance passenger comfort. The trains will have a distinctive nose and passengers will be able to view the line ahead. The local community will be able to have a say in the final shape of the nose and the livery.
Each car will have three double doors per side. Inside there will be space for child buggies, bicycles and wheelchairs and priority seating for disabled passengers. The model will be used to refine the final design.
Alstom is also supplying the CBTC system for the new line to allow trains to operate fully automatically at 4-minute headways. The new line, which is due to open in the first half of 2019, includes 15km of tunnels and 4km of elevated railway linking Epping with Cudgegong Road. It will also incorporate the existing commuter line between Epping and Chatswood which will be upgraded to automatic metro operation to create a 36km metro line.
