KIWIRAIL opened a new rail link to dairy company Fonterra's milk powder plant at Darfield west of Christchurch on April 12, the first new section of railway to be constructed on the South Island of New Zealand for more than 60 years.
The 700m connection is expected to carry about 200,000 tonnes of milk powder per year for export through Lyttelton Port of Christchurch and will eliminate about 17,000 lorry journeys to the port per year.
The project included the construction of three sidings and a container loading terminal.
