The RailConnect joint venture comprises Hyundai Rotem, Mitsubishi Electric Australia and UGL Rail and was one of four consortia shortlisted to tender for the contract in July 2015.
“For customers travelling on more lengthy trips, these trains will be more spacious, more comfortable and have features never before seen on our long distance services,” says minister for transport and infrastructure Mr Andrew Constance.
New features on the inter-city fleet will include charging stations for mobile devices on each seat and dedicated space for luggage, prams, bicycles, and wheelchairs. The new fleet will include CCTV, help points, digital passenger information screens and automated announcements.
The new trains will replace the current iconic double-deck stainless steel V-set units currently used on these services as well as allowing the cascading of the more recent ‘Oscar’ EMUs to replace older units on local Sydney suburban services.
The first new train is due to be delivered in 2019.
