The works include the replacement of 562,000m of rail, 136,000 wooden sleepers, and more than 100,000m3 of ballast.

The modernisation also includes alignment works, levelling, and bridge reinforcement. The Piedra Sola – Salto Grande line is mainly used for freight traffic.

The project is being financed by the Mercosur Convergence Fund and is due to be completed within two years.
