The consortium will carry out civil works on the 28km network and will also be responsible for procuring electrical and mechanical systems including signalling and rolling stock. Consortium member RATP Dev will operate the system for 25 years, and CCR has confirmed that Alstom will supply a fleet of Citadis low-floor LRVs for the project.
The 42-station station network is expected to carry up to 250,000 passengers per day, with services operating at headways ranging from 5 to 15 minutes. The first two lines are scheduled to open next year with the remaining four due for completion in 2016.
The Reais 1.2bn ($US 600m) network is being funded with the aid of a Reais 532m grant from the federal government's Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC).
