TTRANS Sistemas de Transportes, a member of the VLT RMBS consortium building the 15km light rail line in the Brazilian city of Santos, has selected Thales to supply signalling and communications systems for the project.

The initial 11km section will run from Porto to São Vicente Barreiros Terminal, while the second phase comprises a 4km branch from Conselheiro Nébias to Valongo. The line is expected to carry around 70,000 passengers per day, reducing the city's bus fleet by 23%.

Thales' contract includes signalling and control systems, fixed and mobile communications systems, data transmission, multimedia solutions and the electronic traffic monitoring system.

The project has a budget of Reais 855m ($US 394m) and is due to be completed next year.
