The company is owned by the City of Budapest, enabling the transfer the company and its assets to the government through Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), which took over operations on November 24.
The original intention was to transfer the company to government ownership by January 1 2017.
Services are now specified by NFM, the ministry responsible for transport and annual losses of around Forints 11 billion ($US 37m) are reimbursed to the City of Budapest.
Interestingly, BHÉV now operates not only the lines H5, H6 and H8/9 which cross the city boundaries, but also Line H7 from Boráros tér to Csepel, which runs entirely within the city.
There were previously plans to rebuild Line H7 as a tram line, but this may now not materialise. As a MÁV company, BHÉV will look at rebuilding the lines and purchasing new rolling stock, should finances (primarily EU funds) allow.
