At present services average one train per hour on the Lakeshore East line from Toronto Union to Oshawa and the Lakeshore West line from Union to Hamilton, although peak services operate at 25-minute headways.
Ontario transportation minister Mr Glen Murray announced on April 19 that from June 29, 18 additional services will operate on weekdays on the Lakeshore East line, with 19 extra trains from Toronto to Hamilton. Weekend services will also be stepped up and the summer weekend trains from Toronto to Niagara Falls introduced in 2009 will resume on June 29.
According to regional Toronto and Hamilton area transit authority Metrolinx, Go Transit has witnessed average annual growth of 5-7% in commuter rail ridership over the last decade, and trains have been extended from 10 to 12 cars to cope with rising demand.
