The contract includes electrification at 2x25kV ac as well as maintenance. The work covers installation of overhead catenary, substations and transformers.

This is part of a €66m project to electrify the final section of the main line from Irun on the French border to Lisbon and upgrade it for 200km/h operation. This section also forms part of the European Union’s (EU) TEN-T Atlantic Corridor linking France and Germany with the Iberian peninsula. The project is being co-financed by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

Adif completed the electrification of the first part of the line from Medina del Campo to Salamanca and its connection with the Madrid - Galicia high-speed line in December 2015. This $53.1m scheme cut the Salamanca - Madrid from 2h 36min to 1h 36min.
