ROMANIAN infrastructure manager CFR has awarded a consortium of Astaldi, FCC Construction, Salcef, and Thales a Lei 1.76bn ($US 420m) contract to upgrade the 36.1km Bârzava - Ilteu section of the Curtici - Simeria line, which forms part of Pan-European Corridor IV (Dresden/Nuremberg - Prague - Vienna - Budapest - Bucharest - Sofia - Thessaloniki/Istanbul).

Under the contract, which was awarded following a public tender, the consortium will be responsible for the construction of 17 new bridges and the refurbishment of five bridges, a 649m-long tunnel, seven overpasses and three stations. The consortium will also carry out electrification works and install GSM-R and ETCS Level 2.

The upgrading of the line will increase the maximum speed to 160km/h for passenger trains and 120km/h for freight.
