A feasibility study into the construction of a €1bn route between Dobbiaco and Calalzo in Italy's Belluno province will take place following an agreement signed on February 13.

Sistemi Territoriali and Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige, Italy, will undertake the study, which is being part-funded by the European Union. The companies will design an operating plan, budget and timeline within a year.

The route, whose length is still to be decided, will be standard gauge with a maximum linespeed of 100km/h and minimum curve radius of 300m.

From 1921 to 1964 a narrow-gauge railway linked the towns but this is now used as a cycle track.
