Sistemi Territoriali and Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige, Italy, will undertake the study, which is being part-funded by the European Union. The companies will design an operating plan, budget and timeline within a year.
The route, whose length is still to be decided, will be standard gauge with a maximum linespeed of 100km/h and minimum curve radius of 300m.
From 1921 to 1964 a narrow-gauge railway linked the towns but this is now used as a cycle track.
