ÖBB will stick to the concept of locomotive hauled push-pull sets, and the new coaches will be 26m long and designed to run at 200km/h. ÖBB expects the coaches to be delivered in 2019-20 and the vehicles must be approved for operation in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

In addition, ÖBB intends to add to its fleet of 90 class 5047 DMUs and class 2016 locomotive-hauled push-pull sets, which all have no low floor access, by procuring new DMUs.

The results of a survey, to be conducted by ÖBB on passenger lines where the old stock is still in use, seeks to discover the needs and requirements of passengers to use as input for the specifications in a forthcoming tender procedure.
