Prorail is leading the procurement on behalf of the regional public transport authority of Overijssel province, the city of Zwolle, and the town of Kampen.

The contract will encompass the construction and installation of power supplies, technical equipment, and overhead catenary. The line will also be resignalled and the maximum line speed will be raised from 100km/h to 140km/h.

The contract does not include construction of a new station at Zwolle Stadshage or the planned renewal of the line's entire superstructure.

A preferred bidder for the electrification contract will be selected in the second quarter with works scheduled to begin early next year. Electric operations will start in December 2017, when Syntus is due to take over operation of the Zwenzwoka regional network, which comprises the Zwolle - Wierden - Enschede and Zwolle - Kampen lines. All services on both routes will be operated by new electric trains.

Volker Rail recently began work on the electrification of the 40km Zwolle - Wierden line under a contract awarded by Prorail and the Overijssel provincial government last May.
