From 2018, Alstom will deliver 47 bi-mode locomotives for mainline and shunting operations. These will be capable of running with one or two diesel engines according to operating requirements, which SBB says will reduce noise, and fuel consumption and cut carbon emissions by up to 6000 tonnes per year.

Windhoff will supply 35 self-propelled infrastructure maintenance vehicles, which will also be equipped with two engines.Deliveries are due to start in 2017.

With increasing construction and maintenance activity on the network, SBB says investment is required to achieve greater efficiency with fewer vehicles.
