NORWEGIAN infrastructure manager Jernbaneverket awarded the first contract for the electrification of the 106km Trondheim - Hell - Storlien Meråker Line on January 12, when it signed a NKr 26.9m ($US 3m) deal with Swedish engineering consultancy Sweco, which will carry out detailed planning for the NKr 3bn project.

Sweco will assign 20 engineers to prepare detailed technical documentation and cost estimates in line with Norwegian government auditing standards. It will also draw up tender documents for a turnkey contract to carry out electrification works, which are due to be completed in 2023.

Jernbaneverket plans to hold a supplier briefing for prospective bidders for the main electrification contract at the Radisson Blu hotel in Vaernes on Febraury 4. Tendering is due to begin in the second quarter.
