The converter, which will be commissioned in the second quarter of 2017, comprises several series insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) and capacitors, which build the required voltage in small steps. Siemens says this reduces switching frequency and therefore cuts power loss by around 10% compared with existing systems.
Multilevel frequency converters are also more compact than other systems.
