SWEDISH infrastructure manager Trafikverket has awarded Siemens a contract worth around €17m to supply a Sitras SFC Plus static frequency converter to feed power from the 50Hz public grid into the railway's 16.7Hz traction power network.

The converter, which will be commissioned in the second quarter of 2017, comprises several series insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) and capacitors, which build the required voltage in small steps. Siemens says this reduces switching frequency and therefore cuts power loss by around 10% compared with existing systems.

Multilevel frequency converters are also more compact than other systems.
