NEW figures released by Trenitalia show ridership on the operator's Freccia high-speed services increased 6.5% last year to reach a record 38.9 million passengers, despite the launch of NTV's competing Italo services.

Trenitalia saw significant increases in passenger numbers on several long-distance routes, including Turin – Rome (27%), Genoa – Rome (15%), and Milan – Ancona (14%).

The total distance travelled by Frecciarossa, Frecciaargento, and Frecciabianca trains increased by 7.2% to 12.31 billion-km and the total number of services operated rose 4% to 70,895, a daily average of 194 trips, with 94% of trains arriving at their destination on time.

Trenitalia sold 13.91 million discounted tickets during 2012, 8.6 million of which were Super Economy and Economy fares introduced in June 2012. Internet ticket sales also soared 57% to 15 million.
