The station, which is located to the east of Utrecht Central on lines to ‘s Hertogenbosch and Arnhem, has been constructed as part of the Randstadspoor project, which aims to create a high-frequency suburban rail network around the Netherlands’ fourth-largest city. This includes a number of infrastructure enhancements in the Utrecht area, including the remodelling of Utrecht Central station and four-tracking of the line to Geldermalsen.

Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn has two island platforms with four tracks, and provides easy access to the historic city centre as well as De Uithof university. In addition to main line trains, the station will be served by the light rail Uithof Line, which is due to open in 2018.
