GERMAN Rail (DB) says it is on schedule to begin construction on a new depot for ICE high-speed trains at Nippes northwest of Cologne later this year after receiving final planning consent for the €220m project.

The facility will maintain all types of ICE and is due to be completed in time for the introduction of the new ICx fleet in 2017.

The depot will employ up to 400 staff and is designed to be carbon neutral, with a 16,000m2 photovoltaic system covering the roof and geothermal power for heating and cooling.
