The project will cost €252m, of which €223m is funded by the German government. Among the works planned is the connection of the under-construction high-speed line between Berlin, Leipzig and Halle which is part of the high-speed line between Berlin and Nürnberg via Erfurt.
A new link to a new depot is also included in the works, while signalling will be modernised through the consolidation of approximately 20 signalboxes into a single control centre.
The works will start in 2014 and are scheduled for completion in 2015.
