Both the Torrens and Goodwood junctions include grade crossings between interstate standard-gauge tracks and the broad-gauge suburban network. Services will be separated at both locations with the construction of new underpasses, which will also allow 1800m-long freight trains to operate between Melbourne and Adelaide, and cut up to 30 minutes from journey times on the corridor.

In addition the project includes elimination of four level crossings in the city centre and refurbishment of two suburban stations.

Planning for the $A 443m project has been underway for several years. According to the federal government, work could commence as early as next year, although its contribution will not be available until 2015-16. The state of South Australia will provide the balance of the funding.
