GRail owns 30 locomotives and 894 wagons which are formed into nine freight trains. GRail has a long-term, take-or-pay contract with Glencore Coal to haul all coal produced at its mines in the Hunter Valley to the Port of Newcastle. GRail currently hauls 40 million tonnes of coal annually to Newcastle.

G&W says the acquisition will strengthen GWA’s footprint in Australia by adding a significant presence in the Hunter Valley coal supply chain while complementing GWA’s existing intermodal, agricultural and mining business in South Australia and the Northern Territory where it operates the 2249km Tarcoola - Alice Springs -Darwin line.

G&W owns or leases 121 freight railways worldwide with around 7200 employees and more than 2800 customers.
