CONSTRUCTION started on May 5 of a 1260km heavy-haul railway to transport coal from mines in the Luliang area of Shanxi province to the Yellow Sea port of Rizhao in Shangdong province.

The Yuan 99.8bn ($US 15.8bn) line is due to open in 2014 and will have an annual design capacity of 200 million tonnes. The railway should benefit road users as the coal is currently transported by road, but the large number of lorries required to move it cause severe road congestion.
