SWEDISH mining company LKAB has awarded Hector Rail a five-year contract to operate trains from its iron ore mines in Kiruna and Malmberget in the north of the country.

From December Hector Rail will operate trains from Kiruna and Malmberget to the port of Luleå seven-days-a-week. The operator will also provide shunting services Malmberget and Luleå.

Hector Rail says it will use its new Siemens Vectron locomotives, which are equipped with last-mile diesel engines, obviating the need for heavy diesel shunters at terminals.
