The sell-off was originally due to take place at the beginning of this year, but was subsequently deferred to the second half of 2012. The privatisation is a condition of Portugal's bailout by the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund.

CP Cargo made an operating loss of around Euros 34.5m in 2010, and carried 9.2 million tonnes of freight.
