A TRIAL intermodal train from the Chinese port of Lianyungang to Herne in Germany's Ruhr region arrived at its destination on June 21 having completed the 11,300km journey across Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, and Poland in 17 days.

The trial is part of a joint initiative between the Port of Lianyungang and Wanne-Herne Railway & Harbour Company (WHE) and was carried out with the support of Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) logistics subsidiary KTZ Express.

The partners hope to establish a regular service on the route in the future, with connections to services to Milan, Verona, Vienna, Copenhagen, and Malmö through Container Terminal Herne.
