SBB placed an SFr 980m order with Stadler in October 2014 for 29 of the 11-car articulated trains, with an option for 92 additional sets. The multi-system EMUs will initially operate on Basle/Zürich – Milan services via the Gotthard Base Tunnel and will be authorised for use on the Italian, Austrian and German networks.

Each 202m-long train will accommodate up to 405 passengers including 288 in second class and 117 in first. With an entry floor height of 940mm, the Giruno provides step-free access from 55 and 76cm-high platforms.

The train will comply with TSI High-Speed and will meet DIN EN 15227 crash safety standards.

A pre-series train will be handed over to SBB for certification on May 15 2017. The fleet will enter service from the end of 2019.
