Ridership on two lines has grown steadily since they opened in May 2011, with more than 150 million passengers carried to date. To meet the growing demand and cater for the two extensions, STRS has decided to double the size of its LRV fleet to 44.

The 32m-long low-floor Citadis LRVs can transport up to 606 passengers when operating in multiple. Each LRV has 12 doors per side and is designed for use by mobility-impaired passengers. Delivery is scheduled 26 months after the contract enters into force. Static and dynamic testing will be conducted in Rabat.

The two new sections comprise a 2.4km extension in Rabat, which will continue the line south from Moulay Youssef Hospital in Akkari to Al Kifah Avenue in Yaâcoub Al Mansour, and a 4.6km extension in Salé from Hassan II to Zarbia Avenue and the new provincial hospital.
