Construction began in September 2012 and the extension adds five stations to Bogestra’s already-extensive tram network, which serves the cities of Bochum, Gelsenkirchen and Herne.

Line 302 services from Langendreer operate through to Beur north of Gelsenkirchen via Bochum Main Station and Gelsenkirchen Main Station. Services on the new extension are operated by Variobahn low-floor LRVs supplied by Stadler Pankow.

In the second phase of the project, which is due to be completed in 2019, a 3km link will be constructed between Langendreer Markt and Papenholz, which will enable Line 310 services to operate via Langendreer.
