The vehicles are more than 30 years old and Bombardier says that structural revisions will extend their life by 10 years. The trams were originally delivered as two-section vehicles, but were extended between 2001 and 2003 with a low-floor central section.
The first refurbished vehicle is due to return to service in January 2015.
