A cooperation agreement for the financing, design and construction of a two-line tram network in Brescia was signed on March 29 by the city’s mayor Mr Emilio Del Bono, Italian State Railways (FS) CEO Mr Renato Mazzoncini, and Brescia Mobility CEO Mr Carlo Scarpa.

The network will comprise a north-south line and an east-west line, with a shared section in the city centre.

The municipality plans to submit a funding application for the project to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure by December. The state is expected to provide 50-60% of the funding required for the project, with FS financing the remainder.

Construction is expected to begin in 2020 with the first sections opening in 2023.
