Siemens’ $US 41m bid will now be submitted to Charlotte City Council for approval. Unlike the Siemens LRVs already in service on the Blue Line, the S70 LRVs for the Gold Line will be equipped with batteries to enable catenary-free operation.

The initial 2.4km section of the Gold Line from Spectrum Center to the Presbyterian Hospital opened last year and the second phase will add 4km to the line with extensions west to Johnson C. Smith University and east to Sunnyside Avenue.

Construction will begin in January and the extensions will open in August 2020.
