The 11km Line 2 will link Science Park in the northwest of the city with the main station and Kuhberg in the southwest. The €155m project is due to be completed in 2018 and ridership is initially forecast to be around 8300 passengers per day.

Federal funding for the project is being provided under the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG).

Last year Stadtwerke Ulm (SWU) selected Siemens for a €31m contract to supply 12 low-floor LRVs for the new line. The 31.5m-long Avenio vehicles will accommodate up to 175 passengers.
