The project involves extending Line D 3.9km beyond its existing eastern terminus at Aristide Briande through the port of Strasbourg and across the river on a new bridge to serve Kehl mainline station, before terminating outside the town hall.

The total cost of the extension will be around €93m, including €28m for the new bridge, which will also provide a new pedestrian and cycle route between Kehl and Strasbourg. The 1.7km German section of the line will cost €44m.

Trams are due to begin running to Kehl station in mid-2016, with the final section to the town hall scheduled for completion in 2017.
