The initial batch will replace the oldest vehicles in Semitan’s fleet - 46 39.2m-long Alstom TFS trams - which date from the opening of the first line in 1985.
Semitan is still considering the length of the new vehicles. One option calls for vehicles up to 48m long with a minimum capacity of at least 300 passengers, 50 of them seated, while another option is for part of the new fleet to be long vehicles with the remainder supplied as short LRVs with the ability to extend them.
The tender includes three elements:
• assistance in the consultation phase with manufacturers
• management of the design, construction, testing, certification, and commissioning phases, and
• assistance with the evaluation of safety-critical interfaces with existing equipment.
The tender forms part of the city’s new public transport strategy, which was unveiled by the mayor of Nantes, Mrs Johanna Rolland, on January 24. The strategy calls for an investment of €310m by 2020 with the aim of providing alternatives to the car.
Closing date for bids is September 20.
