MOSCOVITES got their first taste of the Russian capital’s next generation tram on March 17, when the city’s mayor Mr Sergey Sobyanin marked the introduction of two prototype Vityaz-M vehicles into passenger service.

Moscow tram operator Mosgortrans awarded a joint venture of Transmashholding subsidiary Metrowagonmash and PK Transport Systems a Roubles 56bn ($US 978m) contract last year to supply 300 of the low-floor vehicles and maintain the fleet for 30 years.

Each three-section vehicle will accommodate up to 260 passengers, 60 of them seated.

Deliveries are due to be completed in 2019.
