THE Brazilian city of Niterói, which is located across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro, has started a feasibility study for the construction of an 11km light rail network.

The French Development Agency (AFD) will finance the Reais 500,000 ($US 151,870) study, which is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2018, following a cooperation agreement signed at the end of November between the Municipality of Niterói and AFD.

The network will connect the ferry terminals at Araribóia Square, in the city centre, and at Charitas in the south, and serve Icaraí, Santa Rosa, São Domingos and Ponta D'Areia. The feasibility study will help to determine the cost of the project.
